Mercure Miri City Centre Becomes the First Hotel in Malaysia
to Earn the Green Key Certification, Pioneering a Greener Future in Sarawak
Mercure Miri City Centre proudly earned the Green Key certification, becoming the first hotel in Malaysia to receive this prestigious international recognition. The certification, awarded to establishments demonstrating a profound commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable practices, places Mercure Miri City Centre at the forefront of sustainability, aligning with Sarawak’s vision for a greener, more eco-conscious future.
“It is an honour to be in a team of like-minded people to drive sustainable change across the industry, local community and fellow Heartist (a term used to refer to employees of Accor’s hotels) colleague. Being the first hotel in Malaysia to be Green Key certified is a milestone we set out to achieve and we will continue to support both Accor’s and Sarawak’s green initiatives,” said Shan Ravendran, General Manager of Mercure Miri City Centre.
This milestone is a testament to the team’s dedication, collaborative effort, and steadfast commitment to embedding sustainability in every facet of hotel operations. Achieving the Green Key certification required extensive preparations and adherence to rigorous environmental standards, proving that Mercure Miri City Centre is more than a hotel—it is a beacon of sustainable hospitality in Malaysia
A BETTER WORLD STARTS HERE
Travel connects us to the world.
That’s why it’s so important to us to make sure we’re taking care of it.
We are committed to eliminating single-use plastics from your experience. As part of this commitment and to help conserve the planet’s resources, we have provided a water filter tap in each room. Choose a reusable bottle and help us eliminate single-use plastics from your experience.
We have also made other planet-friendly changes to your room. To save energy and water, sheets are customarily changed after each stay. Place the bed linen card on the bed if you would like us to change the sheets. If you would like the towels replaced, please leave them on the bathroom floor.
These small changes make a big difference in minimizing our footprint.
Live local, love global.
Green Key is a voluntary eco-certification programme for hotels, hostels, campsites, holiday parks, small accommodations as well as conference centres, attractions and restaurants.
The Green Key certification is based on compliance with strict internationally recognised criteria in the areas of environmental management (water, energy, waste, cleaning, etc.) and sustainability education (staff, guests, suppliers, etc.).
Compliance with the criteria is confirmed through a rigorous application process and third-party verified after regular on-site audits. The certification is valid for one year at a time.
Currently (May 2023), there are more than 4,000 establishments in 60 countries certified with the Green Key.
Green Key is endorsed by various institutional partners, international hotel chain and tour operator partners and cooperating with a range of web partners.
The Green Key programme is managed by the international charity, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and its national member organisations.
